Improving your Game

Here at Fort Lauderdale Country Club, the PGA Teaching Professionals will take players of all abilities to the next level. A dedicated staff of PGA instructors is available to help members and their guests every day. The PGA Teaching Professionals also conduct golf clinics periodically throughout the year.

All of our PGA Professional Staff are available for private and group instruction seven (7) days a week during Pro Shop hours. Our members can choose from our specialist, Director of Instruction, for full swing, another Pro for bunker work, and yet another for course management, or the same Pro for all of their skill building needs.

  • Lessons and Clinics
    • All skill levels can be accommodated, from someone wanting to learn the game of golf from the ground up, to a scratch golfer who just needs a specialized tune up, and everything in between. Can't get out of those bunkers? Greenside chipping hit or miss? Shots fade right? Just can’t tame a particular club? You name it, and they will create a custom program just for you.

Lessons can be one off for 30 mins, an hour or longer, be a series of lessons, include on-course instruction - all, of course, to match members' schedules.

Clinics are also offered, from weekly Ladies' Nine Holer clinics before their rounds, a n 5 lesson program for the beginner golfers, and a junior summer golf camp program. Our Equity members enjoy a complimentary clinic in season once per month.

Contact any of the Pro Shop staff and discuss what you have in mind and they can create a custom program for you

  • Michael O'Brien, PGA General Manager
  • Mark VanDyck, PGA Director of Golf

    • Shortly after graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Engineering, Mark came aboard in November of 1995 as an Assistant Golf Professional. Although he studied to be a “rocket scientist,” the passion for the game he’s loved since he was 10 years old persevered. Mark then worked rapidly through his apprentice program and was elected to PGA membership in 1998. In April of 2000, he was named the Director of Golf where he has been ever since. He is a Florida native who is living his dream job every day. He is also an accomplished staff leader, instructor, and friend to all. His passion to grow the game and serve the membership of the Club speaks for itself. As a highly regarded golf businessman, Mark also holds the distinction of having served in virtually every governance capacity within the South Florida PGA Section. He most recently served a two year term as the Section President governing over 1,600 PGA Class “A” professionals. As a Section officer, he is also a national delegate with the PGA of America. When Mark is not at the Club, he enjoys playing golf amongst his peers at Section and Chapter events, as well as league bowling and the beach.

  • Ken Tate, PGA Head Golf Professional

    • "Growing up in Rochester, New York gave me the opportunity to learn and develop my life skills through the game of golf. I knew at a young age that I wanted to have a career in golf and therefore attended Mississippi State University. After graduating from MSU and the PGA of America (Class A Professional), I found Fort Lauderdale Country Club to be my home away. Enjoying 15 years of teaching and professional experience is self-rewarding and I look forward to my next years assisting members and junior with all their golfing needs. My other enjoyments in life are my two wonderful kids (Matthew & Kaitlyn) and the best wife one could ask for (Jennifer). I also enjoy baseball, basketball, football, skiing, and swimming."

  • Rob Lenkey, PGA Director of Instruction

    • Rob’s love for the game started when he first picked up a golf club at the age of 12. Rob played in the Maryland State Junior Golf Association and won a number of events at different age divisions. After graduating from high school, he attended the Golf Academy of the South, as well as Johnson and Wales University. His collegiate career as a player was a success, which led him the mini-tour circuit. Rob came to FLCC in 2006 as an Assistant Golf Professional, working all facets of golf operations. He was elected to Class "A" membership in 2010. His passion to teach and play has always been first and foremost. When the opportunity presented itself for Rob to teach full-time here, he immediately jumped on it. Since 2011, Rob has been the club's lead instructor, working with all levels of abilities within the membership. Rob's teaching philosophy is simple, he doesn't teach a swing, he fixes it.

  • Phil Salvi, PGA Apprentice

    • Phil Salvi, First Assistant Golf Professional Phil was born in Long Island, New York, and has lived in the Fort Lauderdale area for the past 25 years. Phil learned the game of golf at the age of 13 while playing with his father, and his passion for the game persuaded him to make golf his profession.

Phil joined the Pro Shop team in 2013 and provides golf lessons to those new to the game of golf, to the experienced golfers wanting to tune up their game, and everyone in-between. Phil spends time outside of the Country Club volunteering with the Alternative Education Foundation, which supports social skill development, academic advancement, and sensory integration for children and adolescents diagnosed with Autistic spectrum disorders, AD/HD, and non-verbal learning disorders.

  • Hillary Tierney, PGA Apprentice

    • Hillary grew up on the outskirts of Traverse City, Michigan at a golf and ski resort where she learned to play golf at the age of three. Hillary's late father worked as a golf professional in Michigan and taught Hillary all she knows about the game. Hillary states that her father was a teacher at heart and inspired her from a young age that golf and teaching golf was something they could do together. As they say, the apple didn't fall far from the tree as Hillary's brother, Daniel Urban is a Head Golf Professional in Michigan, and sister, Claire Urban is a volleyball coach.

Before coming to Fort Lauderdale Country Club, Hillary moved to Florida in 2012 where she was an Assistant Golf Professional at LPGA International in Daytona Beach. In 2014, Hillary was recruited to take on the position of Assistant Golf Professional at Duran Golf Club in Viera (near Melbourne). Hillary successfully grew the game of golf for the ladies in the area and was well known as one of the best golf professionals in the community!

Hillary's golf background includes over 15 years in the golf industry. She enjoys teaching and growing all aspects of the game. With all the golf information that there is out there, Hillary takes in as much as she can to further her education about teaching and learning the game. She is currently in Level Three of the PGA of America's PGM program and is working towards being a Director of Instruction one day.

Hillary enjoys playing golf with her husband (who ironically is a golf professional), going to the beach, running, and cooking.
